pixelCAT
is a software database tool that allows you to organize, categorize,
search and
display digital images on your hard drive or within a local area
network. If you have a large collection of digital images that you
wish to link to a searchable database, pixelCAT is the
answer. Whether they be GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, or PCX images, pixelCAT
can handle the task of linking all of your images to a searchable
database. By linking your image collection to a database you will be
able to add keywords, dates, names and comment fields to your
collection, all of which makes finding that "image in a haystack" all
the easier. pixelCAT does not actually store your images, but
rather pixelCAT stores descriptions and keywords and the
locations where your images can be found. pixelCAT is more like
an index that can be referred to and searched to find, view and print
digital images.

You can create an unlimited
number of databases, and display multiple databases within pixelCAT
all at the same time. For instance you may wish to create a database
containing links to your large collection of clipart, and another database
linked to a collection of Civil War photographs, and another database linked
to digital scans of old book pages. Engineering firms and government
agencies may wish to create databases linked to plan sheets and/or scanned documents. Up to five databases can all be open at the same time within
pixelCAT, and each database is displayed on a "tabbed" page (see
example below):

What makes pixelCAT stand
out from other digital image databases is that with pixelCAT you can
create sub-groups from within a larger group of images. Each record (or
row) within a database can define and display an entire series of images
based upon a
filename filter. For example, let's say you have 1000 images of
assorted fruits in a particular folder on your hard drive. Assuming
you've named your images in a logical manner, such as APPLE1.JPG,
APPLE-RED.GIF,
APPLES.BMP,
APPLE-WINESAP.TIF,
BANANA.JPG,
ORANGE-NAVEL.GIF,
etc. you can create a new record (a.k.a. a row) within the database and use
a filename filter of APPLE*
that will display all of the images whose filenames begin with APPLE.
You will be able to view one APPLE
image after another, sequentially, and easily.
Simply click the NEXT button to display the next APPLE
image.
Although using filename
filtering is not a requirement, it is a unique feature to pixelCAT that you
will not find in other software programs. Filtering images by
filenames may seem like a simple concept, but it can be very powerful if you
devise a file naming procedure for your images and remain consistent.
For instance, let's say you are
an architectural firm, and you wish to group house plan images and sheets
according to house model within a database. You can create a single database containing
all of your company's house plans, and then create a record for each house
design, and within that record display sequentially only images related to
that particular house plan design. For instance, let's say you have
house designs, photos and plan sheets digitized for 3 different house
designs: The Rockford, The Jefferson and The Cambridge. And let's say
that for each of these 3 house designs you have a front view, a basement
plan, a first floor plan and a second floor plan. That's 4 images for each
house design. If you name your images consistently, such prefixing all
of the "Rockford" design image files with ROCKFORD
you would be able to create a new record within the database, then set the
file display filter to ROCKFORD*
and presto, whenever you click on
that row/record within that database in the future, all of the
"Rockford" design images will appear sequentially for you to view
and browse through. Only those images related to the
"Rockford" model will appear when you highlight the
"Rockford" record that you just created. You would then proceed to
enter/create two more records, one each for the "Jefferson" and
"Cambridge" designs.
